Short Term Effect of Stress
When you begin to feel stress, your blood pressure starts to rise, your heart starts beating faster, and you tense up. You may experience "muscle holding" in your neck and shoulders, sweating, or stomach discomfort. These physical reactions to stress can be triggered by something occurring in the present, a memory, or by anticipating the future. If your body isn't in good condition, this sudden surge of hormones can put a tremendous strain on your heart, veins and lungs. The sudden need to release internal stress may also result in emotional outbursts that you may regret later. Many people deal with stress by using destructive behaviors such a smoking, drinking, overeating or drug abuse to keep themselves "sedated" so that they can continue to "function" as well as "feel better".
Long Term Effects of Stress
The psychological effects of long term stress include anxiety, moodiness, depression, frustration, and sadness. You may have trouble thinking clearly, making decisions, focusing, remembering, trouble sleeping, become prone to accidents, or be consumed with negative thoughts. The physical effects of long-term stress can include headaches, muscle pain, back pain, chest pain, upset stomach and diarrhea or constipation, or lingering colds.
The longer that stress goes unresolved, the greater the chance that you will develop a serious illness. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms of stress, the sooner you seek professional and/or medical guidance, the better the chance that you will find relief.
